Tribute To Phil

Like many many people I am sure my memories of Phil start with his smile.  I doubt anyone who really knew Phil will say that they were ever greeted by anything else than his warm, genuine, smile.

In many respects I think this summarises Phil: he led his life leading by example.  We all wish we could lead off every interaction with a genuine, heartfelt smile; Phil actually did so.  Considering the amount of responsibilities he had and commitments he made to others, it always inspired me to notice he was effectively always saying, silently through his own example: it is possible to be nice, open and warm.  Just watch me.

Many many peope in Jean's family made me feel welcome and wanted, even before we got married.  Phil went so far as to help me understand what it would take to become a US citizen.  Of course in this regard he was uniquely qualified!

Phil was also always a learned, astute observer of world affairs, eager to engage on topics that he knew were more visible to us as Europeans and to sollicit our views.  Open to persuasive arguments, but clear in his own mind about his convictions, Phil had in effect many Enlightenement qualities to go along with his committed Faith.

And of course: his sense of humor.  No doubt influenced by his beloved Dad, he has supplied me and many others with a treasure trove of jokes and anecdotes.  Like most people I forget the jokes I am told, even the ones that make me crack up and hurt my ribs.  I remember many from Phil: mostly because of his delivery.

Funny, warm and smart: Phil was what every human being should be, and what most of us struggle to be consistently.  I will miss him and know we will all struggle to fill the void he leaves behind.

Adieu cher Phil
