Coach Phil

Phil had an amazing mind and memory.  He remembered almost every game the Pacers ever played and what each player did.  Mind you he coached little league basebal with his Uncle Joe for Immaculate Heart of Mary Sports Associaton for around 24 years.

One of my favorite stories he told was in one game when the Pacers were down by 1 in the bottom of the ninth. Nicholas was pitching, Lawrence catching – we could win if Nick could get the last strike.  Nick was nervous and threw a couple of walks.  Nick’s mom was nervous and out of love and concern for Nick wanted Phil to take him out of the game because she thought the pressure too much.  (She really didn’t want Nick taken out, most of us mom’s only wanted to protect our kids.) There were some others that thought maybe Nick should come out also, fearing he couldn’t handle the pressure.  Phil knew Nick could handle it, but someone else said, “you need to go out and talk to him”.  Phil didn’t want to put more pressure on Nick. He walked out to the mound, not sure what he would say.  Lawrence walked in to meet him and Nick, then all of the sudden the rest of the team came to the mound.  Phil didn’t expect this.  He looked around at them and tried to think of something profound to say, than looked at them and said, “throw to the closest base”, and walked off.  Everybody went back to their places, Nick threw the strike and we won the game.  Of course every one thought Phil must of said something really good.  What Phil showed Nick was everyone had his back and he could relax and do his job.

Phil led by example.
