Condolence: A WALK IN TIME WITH MY MOTHER GRACE
My earliest awareness of my mother was during my elementary school years. I remember her early in the morning hurrying to get me ready for school and her ready for work. I remember her doing homework with me after she returned home in the evening. She always seemed to know everything that I did at school and I later attributed that communication to Mr. Ralph Butcher, who was the teacher who took me under his wings.
At age nine I started High School and it was around that time that my mother and I moved from the family house to our own rental in Four Roads. That’s when she taught me how to cook, how to clean the house, how to shop for groceries, how to be the man of the house.
A few years into High School, she got a visa to go to New York and I moved in with my Grandparents who were now living in Six Roads. Even though we were countries apart, I could rely on regular mails with words of love, words of encouragement and a few US dollars. Now we have texting and emails, back then we relied on the Postal service.
My mother was always loving and caring. She was always looking for the opportunity to pursue and secure a better life for us. She understood the sacrifices that she was making and the balancing between spending time with us and working.
As I became an adult, the examples of a hard worker and making sacrifices, became paramount to my desire to succeed. My mother was always ready to listen to me; she was my pillow of strength, my support mechanism.
My mother is truly invaluable, indispensable and unforgettable. She was always willing to share her love and blessings with anyone she came in contact with. I remember when she worked for the Airline Flight Kitchen at the Crane hotel, she would always have a bag of goodies strapped to her bicycle and a group of neighborhood kids would always be waiting for her, she made everyone happy.
I am so grateful that God chose Grace to be my mother. A mother is one of life’s best gifts, someone to treasure all through life and she was a blessing for me.
Grace, I know that you are still listening to me. I now constantly remember the last words we exchanged a few days before you went to Heaven. You asked me when would you see me again; we held hands, I kissed your forehead and I promised that I would be back soon again. I watched you fall asleep that day before I left your room and now, more than ever, I need your strength, your courage, your love and your forgiveness for the promise that I cannot keep until that day when we finally meet again. Forever loving you—Glen.
