Obituary for William Mitzeliotis

William Mitzeliotis, 74, was invited home by Jesus on December 31, 2022. He is survived by his wife, Claudia, and daughters Marie, Katrina, and her husband, Michael. He was especially proud of his grandchildren Alexandrea, Victoria, Mark, and Michael William (the Big Guy).

Bill was born on August 25,1948 in Khartoum, Sudan. He came to America on July 20, 1956. He became a citizen of the United States of America on June 21, 1966. He had a desire to become a citizen of Greece and accomplished this in 2020.

He was married on June 2, 1968 to Claudia Tragares. Together they raised two great daughters and have four grandchildren that he was very proud of. Bill dedicated his life to his family.

He served in the Army in 1968 during the Vietnam era before starting his career with the NYPD, where he worked as an accomplished detective and specialized in narcotics and organized crime. His most well-known case was the Pizza Connection, which is detailed in the book, “The Good Guys.” Upon his retirement from the NYPD he worked as an investigator for Liberty Mutual and for TSA.

When he wasn’t working, he loved to vacation with family and friends in Limnos, Greece, which he considered his second home. On New Year’s Day he would do the polar bear plunge in Coney Island. This was a tradition he started later in life.

When he retired he joined Harbor Gym and was focused on staying healthy. He even went to the gym while enduring chemotherapy and radiation treatments. He was a strong man with a will to live, which he fought for tirelessly, until God called him home.

Bill served on the Parish Council at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church and did it with passion. He was chairperson of the stewardship and took his position very seriously. He served the fellowship coffee hour, which all in the community looked forward to, especially the “Big Guy,” (Michael, his grandson).

Bill loved people and loved talking to everyone. Family and friends in Limnos remember him going from umbrella to umbrella on the beach to socialize. He could often be found talking to neighbors and strangers alike on his block in Brooklyn.

The funeral will take place on January 5, 2023 at 11AM at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church.
In lieu of flowers you can make a donation to Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in his memory.
