Obituary for Veronica Nina Noriega

Veronica Nina Noriega passed away on Saturday 4th February 2023, at 100 years of age. She would always say “I never knew I would live to see this age.”

The daughter of Omenia Simeon and Anacleata Aguilera, Nina was born in Buenos Ayres, Trinidad on April 6, 1922. She was the sister of Aggie, Alfred, Aubrey, Evelyn, Hensley, Irene, Marjorie, Romelda and Timothy.

Nina married Hilton Noriega, on January 24th 1943. They had nine children – Gemma, Eric, June, Vincent, Kenwyn, Joan, Donna, Dianne and Sharon. A loving grandmother, she had seventeen grand-children, twenty-six great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Nina was a gifted seamstress, often making clothes for herself, children and grandchildren. Gardening was her passion and all our gardens looked worthy of Gardener’s Digest once she applied her magical touch. She was a master chef and baker.

Nina migrated to America in 1989, and brought her talents for cooking and gardening to her new home in New York. She would often hold court in her children’s kitchens during social gatherings. She was the focal point of our lives. People gravitated to her. She was a passionate storyteller, historian and friend.

Her love of God and praying her Rosary was well known. We knew not to call while she was “taking her prayers.” She passed this love of God onto her children and grandchildren, often saying “without God, nothing is possible.”

Nina, Mummy Nin, Queen, as she was affectionately known was well loved and will be missed.
