Obituary for Theresa Marie Salcedo

Theresa Marie Salcedo passed away Friday January 6, 2023 at the age of 93 at Saints Joachim & Anne Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was the beloved wife of the late Angelo Salcedo, loving mother to Cecilia Salber (Peter) and Michael (Mary), doting grandmother to Kristin Salber-Black (Jason) and Matthew Salber (Ina), and great-grandmother to Alexander Salber-Black.

Born in Brooklyn, NY on September 17, 1929, she was the middle child of Pasquale and Angelina Gencarello. Losing her mother at a young age, she became a devoted caregiver to all her family. She married in 1945, raised two children, and after Angelo’s death in 1980, worked at Woolworth’s until retirement. Her days were then filled with caring for her grandchildren - picking them up from school, taking them to weekly piano and guitar lessons, playing elaborate games, and cooking dinner for the family (and sometimes even an extra eggplant parmigiana for the neighbors!) before taking the B4 bus home.

She was an accomplished cook, known for her skill with both Italian and Spanish cuisine. A fan of television cooking shows, she watched with pen and paper in hand, always ready to add new dishes to her repertoire of family recipes. She had boundless energy to single-handedly shop for and prepare delicious feasts, not only for holidays, but also for regular Sunday dinners. She also enjoyed reading, crocheting, and later in life she discovered a talent for painting, winning several awards in St. Joachim’s resident art program.

Theresa was predeceased by her brother Louis and brother-in-law Ozzie Rapin. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by her brother Frank, Louis’ wife Lena, and dear nieces, nephews, and their families. She will be lovingly remembered by them, as well as by cherished friends.

Donations in her memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Association P.O. Box 96011 Washington, DC 20090-6011. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 10th from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm at Torregrossa. Burial will be at St. John Roman Catholic Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens.
