Obituary for Pamela Young

is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Pamela Augusta Young. She departed peacefully in her sleep at the hospital in the early hours of February 18, 2023. Falling ill in 2003, she fought her fight with sheer courage and unwavering grace.

Pamela was born January 16, 1951 in St John's Antigua, British West Indies. She was the third daughter to Fernella, a baker by trade, and William, a fisherman and owner of several parcels of farmland. Growing up as one of twelve siblings, Pamela was taught to trust in God, love family, work hard and embrace her culture. She was an intelligent well-mannered child who enjoyed school, helping her mother sell baked goods at the market and spending time with her brothers and sisters.

As a young adult in the 1970s, Pamela followed the path of her older siblings and ventured to the United States in the pursuit of opportunity. Upon arrival she settled in the Bedford Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn with her sister. It was there where she developed an enduring love for New York City and decided to take her bite out of the Big Apple. She attained a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Medgar Evers College and entered the world of corporate America through finance. After working in several financial roles, Pamela decided to expand her professional experience by exploring other industries including: entertainment, real estate, technology and public administration. Summoning the entrepreneurial spirit of her parents, Pamela saved up enough money to purchase her first investment property in 1995 and ultimately became a restaurateur in her local community.

Pamela began dating the love of her life,Eustace Young, as a teenager in Antigua. When she moved to the United States their bond was broken but only briefly. As luck would have it, Eustace migrated to the U.S. shortly after she did and upon arrival they rekindled their relationship. Deeply in love and inseparable, they welcomed a son, Jamar, and were married. Pamela was unendingly proud of Jamar and her infinite supply of unconditional love for him, and her granddaughter Sofia remains unsurpassed.

Pamela’s primary focus was always her son, and she did everything in her power to keep him out of harm's way. It was this drive and focus that Jamar emulated when taking on the responsibility of his mother’s care after she fell ill in 2003. Having lost her husband a few years earlier, Pamela relied solely on her son to manage her health and well being.

Pamela was a staunch believer in her Christian faith and was very involved in the church. In 1991 she became a member of the City of Hope Greater Saint Mary Church and dedicated herself to spreading the gospel of Christ. Her hard work and dedication was validated by the receipt of her Masters Degree in Divinity from the Community Bible Institute and Seminary. She also became a licensed and ordained minister of her church.

Pamela loved a good game of dominos. Prideful of her appearance, she always made sure to see to it that her hair, nails and toes were always done and ready for display. Pamela heralded her culture and was a connoisseur of all things Caribbean including: music, food and the arts. She loved to dance and introduced her son to carnival by taking him to Brooklyn's West Indian Labor Day parade when he was only a few months old. He is now a self-proclaimed “bacchanalist” and hasn’t missed a West Indian Day parade since. Pamela was outspoken and unabridged. While her opinions were often passionate and strong, she was always open to lessons of perspective and compassion.

Pamela was a person of rare character and charm. Elegant and refined yet down to earth and genuine, Pamela lit up every room she entered. Especially warm and empathetic toward others, people seemed naturally drawn to her. Pamela was often surprised by the impact she had on others. Selfless to a fault, she purposely put others first, treating everyone equally regardless of their status in life. Pamela has instilled these qualities in her family and her graceful spirit will live on in the souls of her son, his children and generations to come.

An incredibly loving wife, mother, "mother in love" , "grandma", daughter and sister., she is survived by her son Jamar and his wife Leonor, granddaughter Sofia; her siblings Elrick, Robert, Annetta, Ernestine, Eustace, Veronica, and Tyrone.

The drums are still.
The battle is done.
Finally free of worry and pain.
Though life will go on without her,
it will never be the same.

Her shoes cannot be filled!
She will forever live in our hearts.
May you rest in peace, Mom.
