Obituary for Joseph Guarino:

Joseph (Joe) Guarino, of Brooklyn, NY, passed away in the early morning hours of March 13, 2022, in his home, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Joe was 70 years old.

Joe was the son of Armando and Gilda Guarino, and brother of Christine (deceased). He was a 1968 graduate of Xaverian High School. In 1972 he followed in his father’s footsteps by graduating from Fordham University. Joe went on to a successful career as a small business owner; he owned and operated Neuringers for 35 years.

Joe met his soulmate Margherite Visciano while in grade school at P.S. 201. A true Brooklyn love story, they grew up around the corner from one another and began dating when they were just teenagers. Joe and Margherite married in 1973 and built a beautiful life and family together. They had four children but truly helped raise so many more as the Guarino house was known for its open-door policy and frequent after-school backyard basketball games.

Joe was a pillar of his community, volunteering countless hours to Saint Ephrem Parish as a basketball coach and in-home Pre Cana host couple with Margherite. Joe also started a 3-on-3 basketball tournament when his kids were still students at St. Ephrem School that carried on for many, many years. As a passionate, lifelong fan of the New York Football Giants, his love of the game was never more evident than in his pride and joy, the children’s co-ed flag football league he founded and ran for 20 years. Commissioner Joe never missed a weekend on the field and helped the kids of his community grow a love for football, while also learning to be good teammates, competitors, friends, and people. He was a true giant among men, a pioneer, leader, coach, and friend to all.

Joe cherished his immediate and extended family. For 48 years, Joe was the loving husband of Margherite, née Visciano, and devoted father to their four adoring children: Joseph Guarino Jr., Melissa Guarino (deceased), Amanda Guarino, and Jessica Gabbert. He was the loved and respected father-in-law to Charles Gabbert and Christine Caiafa Guarino (deceased). He was the adored Pop to four beautiful and loving grandchildren: Charles Alfred, Joseph Christopher, Kate Margherite, and Annie Rose. He was a cherished brother-in-law to Pargie, Kathy, Marie, and Frank (deceased), as well as caring uncle to Robert, Joseph (deceased), Jason, John, Stephanie, Kenny, Thomas, and Christina. Joe’s love for people was only matched by the love he had for all the furry family members that blessed his life throughout the years.

Visitation hours will be from 2-8 pm on Wednesday, March 16th at Andrew Torregrossa Funeral Home, 1305 79th Street – Brooklyn, NY 11228. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Thursday, March 17th at Saint Ephrem Church, 929 Bay Ridge Parkway – Brooklyn, NY 11228.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joe’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
