Charles Percival Prince affectionately known as “Percy”, was born on July 22nd, 1947, in Grand Bay Carriacou, Grenada W.I. to parents Geraldine Prince and Charles Cayenne. He was raised by his maternal grandmother Dorothy and later his Uncle Theo while his mother settled in the United States. He attended Mount Pleasant Government School where he excelled in Mathematics and enjoyed playing cricket with his many cousins and friends.
Percy, emigrated to the United States in 1964 at age 17, where he reunited with his mother and siblings Cynthia, Mona, and Teddy. He attended Bushwick High School in Brooklyn, New York and graduated with honors. Following high school, he proudly enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country honorably. After the Navy he reunited with his childhood sweetheart Gloria. They were married on April 24th, 1971. They later welcomed four children, Bryan Patrick, Erik Michael, Dennis Gerard, and Alicia Elizabeth.
While raising his family and working full-time he pursued and attained his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Long Island University in 1982. He spent his career in accounting working at various firms such as Lehman Brothers, Prudential Securities, and later Wachovia Bank.
He was called to the Spiritual Baptist Ministry where he was ordained and served as a Reverend at Sons and Daughters of Zion Spiritual Baptist Church. He was affectionately known as Captain and was Godfather to many children in the Church and beyond. Percy was not only a Reverend but a counselor and a great friend to many. He was always ready with a kind smile, listening ear and thoughtful advice. Young and old appreciated that he never judged and never had a bad word to say about anyone. Over the years, his family and friends have received many voicemails and messages filled with positive and encouraging words.
He retired from Wachovia in 2005 and enjoyed spending time with his loving wife Gloria and their grandchildren. He spent time traveling and attending church spreading the Gospel. He was at the forefront of every birthday, graduation, and family milestone and always humbly led us in prayer. Throughout life’s trials and tribulations and especially when his health began to fail, he maintained a positive attitude and was still present for his family. Still motivating us, still guiding us and as always, loving us. He celebrated his 52nd year wedding anniversary to his wife Gloria with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren by their side. Two weeks later May 7th, 2023, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend, and Captain passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife Gloria, his children Arleen, Bryan, Erik, Dennis, and Alicia. Daughters in law Carla Lenore, Kamilah Holleen-Agnes, and son in law Hans-Jürgen. Message from his loving wife,
My husband loved his children, grand and great-grandchildren more than life, they were his life. He made each one feel special and was so involved in all aspects of their lives. He made extended friends and family feel his love and positivity. His infectious attitude knew no bounds, whether it was with the maintenance personnel in his building to members of his church- you felt his goodness. You became family. He was blessed to the very end with healthcare workers Cecelia and Natoya, who were a huge support and became family during his last days.
His legacy is love – and we are forever grateful!
