Obituary for Anna Dazio

Anna Dazio (July 9, 1923 - Sept. 17, 2018): Anna Dazio, beloved sister, mother and grandmother, died Sept. 17 at Hamilton Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Brooklyn. She was 95. Born in Porto Empedocle, Sicily, to a fishing family, she was the third-oldest of eight children and raised some of her younger siblings. She and her husband, Stefano, immigrated to Brooklyn with their sons, Alfonse and Michael, in 1956. A seamstress by trade, she sewed velvet Christmas dresses with lace cuffs, winter coats trimmed with fur and elaborate Halloween costumes for her granddaughters, Stefanie and Brianna. She was a renowned cook across two continents, with her family always begging for more helpings of osso bucco, arancini and spiedini. In 2012, she traveled to Washington, D.C., for a taping of "Jeopardy," one of her favorite television shows, and for Stefanie's college commencement a year later. She then attended Brianna's high school graduation in 2014 in New Jersey. She often visited her brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews in Sicily with Stefano before his death there in 1998 -- they frequently stayed for whole summers -- and passed on the tradition and her native language to her children and grandchildren.
Her survivors include her sisters, Carmela and Maria of Sicily; sons Alfonse and Michael of New Jersey; and granddaughters Stefanie and Brianna.
The family will receive visitors at Andrew Torregrossa & Sons, Inc. Funeral Home, 1305 79th St., Brooklyn, on Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral mass will be at St. Frances Cabrini, 1562 86th St., Brooklyn, on Saturday at 10:15 a.m In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Frances Cabrini, 1562 86th St., Brooklyn, NY 11228, 718-236-9165 (checks should be made out to St. Frances Cabrini with "memory of Anna Dazio at the bottom") or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in memory of Anna Dazio, www.stjude.org, (please acknowledge to the Dazio family at 2 Amy Way, Red Bank, NJ 07701).
