Obituary

Albert V. Giorgetti, 86, of Brooklyn, NY, died on October 17, 2019 after years of declining health due to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Al was born on January 5, 1933 in the Bronx to Renzo and Mary (Mosca) Giorgetti and grew up in Park
Ridge, NJ before his family moved to the West Village in New York City. There he attended Our Lady of Pompeii School where he met his future brother-in-law, who he introduced to his sister, Marie. His father died when he was a young teenager and he took the responsibility of taking care of his mom and sister very seriously. Al was drafted into the Army in 1953 during the Korean War and served stateside until he was honorably discharged in 1955. He loved serving in the army and would often reminisce about his exploits with his army buddies. He married the love of his life, Delia Aponte, in 1966, 2 years after being set up by friends, although neither was interested in meeting the other at the time. The couple lived in Inwood, NY until 1990 when they moved to Brooklyn to be closer to his mother who was living in a nursing home there.

Those who knew Al remember his sense of humor (often naughty) and kindness. He was a devoted father who attended every basketball game and theater performance of his daughters. During their elementary school years, he was an active member of the school’s Men’s Club and he volunteered at both their Elementary and High Schools as a door monitor. He was always the first to pitch in to help when needed and the last to leave after making sure the work was done.

Al worked at St. Vincent’s Hospital for the majority of his work years, first as a Patient Status clerk in the Admitting office and later as a Hospital Transporter, which he particularly enjoyed. He loved talking to patients he transported and always tried to put them at ease by sharing his own experiences as a patient, of which, as a cardiac patient, there were many.

He was lucky enough to live around the corner from his 3 grandchildren whom he adored, and he spent a majority of his retirement days playing with them or taking them for walks around the neighborhood; Babysitting for his grandson, Dylan, and his great-nephew, Alec, when they were babies brought him immense joy.

Sadly, the last several years of Al’s life were taken from him by the debilitating ravages of Alzheimer’s, which also took the life of his beloved mother. No doubt they have been reunited and as angels will be watching over all the loved ones left behind on earth.

Al is survived by Delia, his wife of 53 years; daughters Juliette (Landi) and Danielle Giorgetti; sister and brother-in-law Marie and Iggy Giorgio; grandchildren Dylan, Tyler and Olivia; granddog Lola and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was a loving father, husband, and grandfather who will be greatly missed and remembered as a good friend to everyone—a well-loved man who would give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need.

I came to know Albert through his daughter Danielle, when he would come to shows she was involved with at the St. Bart's Players in NYC. What was always so clear for anyone to see was his love for his family—they meant everything to him. He will be missed, I know. I will cherish my memories of his being in the audience. My love and sympathy are with all the family--Merrill Vaughn (Davis)
