Obituary for Xavier Francis Ruggiero

Xavier Ruggiero passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, February 13th. He was an only child and is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ann, his five children, Frank, Susan, Carolyn, Nancy, Joanne, 11 grandchildren Tom, Lisa, Kristin, Kevin, Matthew, Christina, Ed, Lauren, Daniel, Abby, Jenna and 2 great grandchildren, Addison and Sebastian.
Xavier (Saverio) Francis Ruggiero, was born on June 16th, 1928 to Italian immigrant parents and grew up in the Dyker Heights area of Brooklyn during the Great Depression. He attended Long Island University where he earned a teaching degree. Although he taught junior high school for a short period, he spent most of his career as a teacher, dean and coach at FDR high school. He was well loved by staff and students alike for his fair, generous and good natured approach to people and his job.
Savy served 29 years in the United States Naval Sea Bee Reserves and retired in 1977 as a Chief Petty officer. He served aboard the French Ship Commandant Dragou as a host officer during the nations’ 1976 bicentennial celebration.
Although Savy enjoyed an early retirement from teaching, he valued education and impressed that on his children. He used his retirement to continue his education with college courses, always looking to enrich his knowledge and understanding of history and our world.
Savy was an avid NY sports fan and loved the Mets, Rangers, Giants and Knicks. He would sometimes listen to one game while watching another one so that he wouldn’t miss a moment of action. He created a dynasty of NY sports fans and especially, NY Mets fans with his children and grandchildren.
The most important person in Savy’s life, the love of his life, was his wife Mary Ann. They knew much joy and happiness throughout their 62 years.  They taught their children about the importance of their commitment to each other, celebrating the good times and working through life's difficult times. He will be missed for his wry, poignant and genuine conversation and the love he so freely gave his family.
